The Santa Ana River

The Santa Ana River is Southern California’s largest and longest waterway, flowing nearly 100 miles from the snowy crest of the San Bernardino Mountains to its outlet at the Pacific Ocean between Newport Beach and Huntington Beach.

During much of the year, very little water flows down the river to the ocean.  Even though, there is normally little fresh water that flows out to the ocean, there are often dangerous strong currents that flow in and out of the river mouth which are caused by the tides.  WARNING! extremely hazardous conditions often exist by the Santa Ana River Mouth!

WARNING - BE SURE TO READ THE INFORMATION AT THIS LINK to learn more about the many dangers at the Santa Ana River Mouth.

While there is normally little fresh water that flows down the river to the ocean after large rainstorms, the Santa Ana River can become a raging torrent - here is a video I took when that occurred:

I have paddled down the Santa Ana River on a SUP and SUP Surfed at the River Mouth
